What helped me during my first days of breastfeeding
February 10th, 2007 · Posted in Breastfeeding · 0 CommentsWhen my baby boy was 7 months old, he was 73 cm (28,7 inches) long and weighed 11 kg (24.2 lbs)!
I breastfed him the hole time, and started adding solid food when he was 6 months old.
The first month
The delivery went really well. It took 12 hours, but with right breathing, and some medication, the pain was bearable, and I was glad I didn’t ask for epidural. I could control the pushing, with the help of midwifes because the baby was really big being 4.4 kg (9.7 lbs), and 54 cm (21.2 inches) at birth.
The first two days at the hospital, I tried offering him my breast by putting the nipple into his mouth, but he wouldn’t suckle. The third day I finally discovered how. The secret was in flattening the nipple as much as possible, then putting it into babies mouth, and then by tickling his upper palate starting his natural suckling instinct.
It worked like a charm. Although he lost 350 g (12.3 ounces) during the first three days at the hospital, the staff noticed his first nursing success by weighing him after it.
I also had a chance to see the struggle of some other young mums trying to nurse their babies.
I was the lucky one because the milk came the forth day very gradually. So I had plenty of time to perfectWhat helped me during my first the nursing technique without the painful fullness of breasts.
The first few weeks, I just, slept, ate, and nursed, whenever my baby asked for it
At the beginning I was constantly scared I wouldn’t have enough milk, but I persisted, nursing as often as I could, and the quantity constantly increased. After 6 weeks my right breast felt painful because of overproduction. I felt painful knobs under my fingers so I started massage of the breast and pumped the milk out. I also offered the painful breast to my baby as often as I could. During rest, and during the night, I kept very cold press on the painful area. It seemed that the cold press was the most helpful thing and the problem went away after one painful day.
